    As your dog ages you start noticing age-related changes such as low vision, hearing loss, low energy levels, dental issues, arthritis and in some cases medical complication such as heart, kidney diseases. At this stage your friend needs your support and concern.

    Eye Problems

    During senior years the most common problem would be low vision mostly because of cataracts. Cataracts decrease your dog's sight and particularly night vision, you will start noticing milky pupils. Surgery might be required if vision is seriously compromised.

    Dental Problems

    The first symptom for dental problem would be bad breath. Dental problems can be prevented with regular tooth brushing and at least once in six months dental checkup with your vet.

    Pimples and Lumps

    As the years go by your dog may develop pimples (pus pockets) which should be checked. In most cases pimples are harmless and to be expected during senior ages. But lumps should be closely watched as they can lead to cancer. The moment you notice any lump growing or changing in shape rapidly or if the lump is in a compromising position such as eye, anus, armpits you should contact your vet immediately.

    Water Intake

    You might notice a change in intake of water and is usually associated with increased urination and can be an indicator of many disease conditions such as Kidney failure, diabetes and hyperthyroidism. These problems need early detection and treatment.

    Change in weight

    Keep a close watch on weight loss/gain during your dog's senior age. In older animals consideration must be given to dietary requirements, dental disease, kidney function, cancer and thyroid conditions. Check with your vet to see if your dog needs any special diet.

    Arthritis

    Most of the dogs develop a degree of arthritis problems as the years go by, particularly in large breeds and overweight dogs. Make sure to provide the warmest, softest bedding to them and Keep your dog's weight stable or start weight reduction if overweight.Also, Keep up your dogs exercise regime without being excessive.

    Heart problems

    If you notice your dog is coughing constantly, immediately take him to vet, as One of the most common symptom seen in dogs for heart problem is Coughing. Reduced exercise tolerance and a swollen abdomen may also be seen with heart disease. As we know prevention is better than cure, make sure you continue giving your dog heartworm medication on a monthly basis.
