I would like to nominate Houston SPCA. Houston SPCA is an amazing organization that has served Animal needs in Houston and surrounding areas.
With the economy, they have tremendous needs for funds to continue operating.

My personal connection: I adopted Iris from them and they are best. Iris was all but 8 weeks old and they charged me only 95 dollars to adopt and she came spayed.

Houston SPCA is an organization that deserves and needs that 1000.00.

I nominate North Carolina Animal Rescue

This rescue helps dogs of all breeds, age and health. They really go that extra mile to get them safe and find them homes.

They also work hard to educate the public about proper animal care and spay and neuter.

Talking Changed my life... not just the dogs'.

North Mecklenburg Animal Rescue definitely deserves a lot more than just $1000. This rescue is a non-profit, no-kill shelter that works out of Charlotte, NC. In their efforts to save and better the lives of dogs in our area, they have endured a lot of hardship that extends outside of the typical difficulties of running a shelter. In the fall of 2008, their previous location had to be vacated due to some unforeseen flooding that hit our area. While all of the dogs were rescued, the location had to be shut down due to the damage and risk of future floods. Some of the kennels were almost completely underwater during this terrible experience. They were forced to move to a temporary shelter in Old Fort, NC before eventually finding and purchasing an older building they're currently transforming into a shelter here in the Charlotte area.

My personal experience with them is not as extensive as even I would like to admit, but they have changed my life. I've always had a passion for dogs and their rescue from homelessness and cruelty. As a college student, I had the time and attention to provide a dog, but did not have the necessary funds for emergency situations that are unpredictable anytime you adopt a dependent. NMAR suggested we foster, so that our love and support could be our contribution to the rescue. My first foster, Russ, was eventually adopted by a former boyfriend, who honestly considers him to be his best friend.

It was not long before I had graduated from school, and still wanting that wonderful interdependent relationship that one can really only have with a dog, I looked to NMAR. They told me about a few dogs that really needed a home that could provide the attention and training that we gave to Russell. That dog, Pepper, is currently curled up against me. North Meck knew that as a first-year teacher, I did not feel ready to take on the financial responsibility of caring for another being, but trusted my efforts would be in Pepper's best interests.

This rescue is constantly an inspiration to me as they give and give. They're not just helping the dogs; they're helping people in their efforts to create families and homes. For them to work in the field that they do and still care that much about helping an individual person, it's admirable. Let's be honest... they work with helping dogs find homes when people are surrendering them because they don't consider the dogs when they're looking for a new home or traveling, etc. I'm blown away by their willingness to believe in individuals like me.

I hope to one day foster many dogs, not to eventually adopt for myself; but to find the perfect families for their individual needs. Thanks to NMAR, I have a reason to believe that change is possible and I find it to be one of my greatest ambitions.

Recent PostSecret entry that emphasizes the typical feelings experienced by shelter worker. I cannot blame them, but it just shows that NMAR can look beyond the bad experiences to find the good in people: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_a7jkcMVp5V...0/lovehate.jpg

I would like to nominate the Yorkie Haven Rescue a 503c(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Texas. I have no connection to the organization aside from being a supporting donor from time to time as a Yorkie owner believing in their mission. Their mission statement is attached. Information can be found at Yorkie Haven Rescue

The mission of Yorkie Haven Rescue is to rescue Yorkie/Yorkie mixes regardless of age, sight, hearing or other handicaps. We are committed to educating the public, our adoptees and volunteers about the Yorkshire Terrier Breed. We pledge to provide a loving and caring environment and keep the pup safe until a forever home can be found. Our focus is not finding the right pup for a home, but finding the right home for each and every pup.
